'Mean Girls' trailer - codes and conventions

  • Film Productions Logo  - At the beginning of the trailer there is the paramount iconic mountain animation, this shows the audience who the film was created by and links it with all of the other paramount films.

  • Film Title - The film title itself isn't shown until 2:17 in the trailer which introduces the name of the film to the audience.

  • Social Media - 2:24, there is a web address: 'facebook.com/marveluk' which shows that Marvel Studios uses social media when promoting their products, and as this film comes under the 'Marvel Cinematic Universe' amongst many others, it gives Marvel brand recognition. Social Media is used to encourage those who view the trailer to find out more information about the film. Social media is a great way for production companies to spread word of mouth about a film.

  • Character Introductions - At 0:13 Lindsay Lohan is introduced to the audience, which was before the film title itself. This suggests that Lindsay Lohan is a key attraction or 'star of the show' and will attract the public and or fans of Lindsay Lohan to watch Mean Girls. Its accompanied with videos in a film reel type. The other characters are introduced through the use of characters in the film who describe them and group into groups such as 'Plastics', they go on to describe the 'plastics'.

  • Music and voice overs -  At the beginning of the trailer it starts with Lindsay Lohan herself talking over about her childhood, there is then voiceovers on the rest of the trailer played by the characters. The characters are introduced through the use of the two characters referring to the school as a 'central nervous system'. The songs such as "Kelis-Milkshake" and "Beyonce - Naughty Girl" which feature in the trailer represent it as being a fun, girly film with a mean edge. All of the music is upbeat and uplifting which shows it's a light-hearted chick flick.

  • Release Date -  In this film trailer example there in little text and focuses mainly on sound and video however I think there should be a release date included to let the audience know when the film is coming to a cinema near them.
