Tripod and Continuity Research

A tripod has extendable legs which you can adjust to your desired height. They have clips which secure it at the height you want. You can screw the pan handle to looser or tighter for how easy you want to move it for a panning shot. The camera plate is where you attach the camera, this is the most important part of the tripod. This holds the camera in place to allow filming.

The purpose of continuity editing is to smooth over a clip. Going from one shot to another and making it fit for example in a conversation you may use a two shot of two characters talking, and then the shot may change to an over the shoulder shot as the characters are still talking. This continues the conversation and shows different angles of them talking. This helps the clip flow well. Films that are not edited well or that do not include the right shots at the right time will not be successful as it will not flow freely and fit together, characters will be positioned differently in different shots and can create confusion to the audience.

The 180 degree rule allows the audience to see where the positioning of characters and objects are without becoming confused. This creates spatial awareness between characters on screen.

"In film making, the 180-degree rule is a basic guideline regarding the on-screen spatial relationship between a character and another character or object within a scene. An imaginary line called the axis connects the characters, and by keeping the camera on one side of this axis for every shot in the scene, the first character is always frame right of the second character, who is then always frame left of the first. The camera passing over the axis is called jumping the line orcrossing the line."

Preliminary activity

Overview

My idea for my preliminary activity will be a 1 minute clip of a character making a cup of tea and another character starts a discussion whilst the other character is still making the tea. I intend to use several different camera angles, shots and editing techniques.

Shot List:
Long shot - Character standing in the kitchen
Cutaway - Other character character walks in the room
Two shot - Standing together
Over the shoulder - Start conversation
Reverse shot - Shows conversation
Extreme close up - Filling the kettle
Close up - Tea bag in mug
Over the shoulder - Carry on conversation
Reverse shot - Response of the conversation
Extreme close up - Facial Expression
Two Shot - Waiting for kettle to boil
Close up - Pouring kettle
High angle - Characters talking
Over the shoulder - Stirring tea
Long shot - Standing talking whilst talking
Extreme close up - Pouring milk
Medium two shot - Adding sugar
Extreme close up - Stirring tea
Medium shot - Drinking tea.
Long shot - Drinking tea

Script:

Person one: (walks into the room) Hi, you alright?
Person two: Hello, yeah i'm fine how're you?
Person one: Nothing a cuppa tea won't solve, put the kettle on for me would you?
Person two:Ah no what's wrong?
Person one: Just exam stress, can't wait until it's all over. It's all just getting on top of me
Person two: I remember the days, it's all worth it in the end. Any sugars?
Person one: I suppose, just wish I would of started revising earlier. And yeah two please
Person two: Don't worry too much, i'm sure you will do great. When's your first exam?
Person one: Tomorrow
Person two: What exams that?
Person one: Maths, it's a retake as well.
Person two: Have you been revising?
Person one: Yeah, like I have been but it feels like it's going in one ear and out the other.
Person two: You think that but when you get in there it'll all come flooding back to you i'm sure.
Person one: I hope so - I've missed big brother for the past 5 days for it.
